Dolder open-air concerts: how it really is

Over the years long time fans of the Dolder open-air concerts had shared with me so many positive comments of “Live at Sunset”. One couple, who came to 10 shows in the last 5 years even said they have never been disappointed. The cozy ambiance, the good food and great selection of artists and variety of music (soul, country, music, blues, jazz, pop, rock) make it to its lasting success listening to them.

The popularity of “Live at Sunset” does not have to be proven anymore with most concerts almost always completely sold out despite the rain forecast. On Saturday for the last show with James Morrison it was sold out. The open-air concerts have been going on at the Dolder every summer in July since 1996. Musical legends but also newcomers have come once or twice to Zurich such as Phil Collins, Andrea Bocelli, Zucchero, B.B King, Simply Red, John Mellencamp, Katie Melua, James Morrison, Elton Jones and many more.

How could I have missed the opportunity in years in Zurich to check it out? On Saturday night reporting about the last concert at the Dolder, I could finally make an opinion for myself.

The atmosphere was enjoyable with many places to eat on all sides of the stage satisfying everyone’s taste. Whether you wanted to eat something small and quickly or rather sit down for something more fancy you could. Some preferred eating sausages at the bar or have a nice barbecue while drinking a glass of wine and enjoying the view. There was also  fresh fruits and home made cakes. Of course for those of you bringing a date to the concert, there would be the Sunset restaurant Golden Circle, the Sunset Lounge or maybe the Yooji’s & Nooba for sushi and sashimis. And how could you not let yourself be tempted by the Hitl spicy and oriental food next to the tent, where you could also listen to live music for about 1 hour. If this does not sound good to you, what would?

Just before the supporting act ponchos were distributed to the people seating at the bottom and who would be rained on in case of rain. Great idea as it was really needed that evening!

Organization was well done and the spectators were reminded in advance how long the breaks were and twice during there was a reminder to let them know to come back to their seats. People existed the open-air concert area as easily as they had entered it. Buses and taxis were there waiting for the fans. At 6:30 P.M parking around the concert area was still possible.

People that evening had come to see play live British soul singer, James Morrison, and supporting act, Swiss newcomer, Bastian Baker. The two good looking, charming, song composers, singers and musicians put a spell on the Zurich public.

Bastian Baker only had a few songs to show what he could do but he sure proved that singing and playing the guitar is what he likes doing and what he can do. After “Lucky”, “I will Sing for You” and “Tomorrow may not be better”, the fans did not want to see him leave the stage.

The incredible talent of James Morrison was the crowning, ending the evening and last day at “Live at Sunset”with brilliance.

I know now why some will be back next year!
