Family Travels: stroller friendly hikes in Switzerland (Zurich, Lucerne, Schwyz, St Gallen & Glarus) – Part II

Lake Pfäffiker

An easy and enjoyable walk with strollers can be taken from the Jucker Farmart in Seegraben to the Pfaffiker Badi in Auslikon. The round trip takes an hour. The way brings you along swamps.

If you don’t find parking in Seegraben, park at the Badi in Auslikon or in Wetzikon business area for free. It will take you another 15 minutes to walk to the Badi.

Lake Wäggital

If you want to go around the entire lake it will be 8 miles/13 km. The walk is paved, lovely and almost free of cars.

Check here my previous article about the Wäggital lake.

Lake Walensee

The lake of Walensee is at the border between the cantons of Glarus and St Gallen. It is the lake you can see when you go skiing or snowboarding in Flumserberg.

Just 40 minutes away from Zurich, you will find the village of Wessen. Park your car in Wessen near the port. There, you can stay for a maximum of 6 hours for 9 CHF. If the parking is full, continue to the next village on your way to Betlis.

By foot always follow the Wanderweg to Betliserstrasse. It takes 50 minutes.

You can continue by foot to the picturesque village of Quinten or take the boat. Check the time of the boat in advance as it does not come often.

The walk to Betlis is nice going along the lake but expect a lot of hikers.

Check out the website (only in German) for the boat departure time.

Lake of Zürich

There are many walks you can take around the lake. One of them starts from the top of Erlenbach. Take the Aussichtstrasse with its beautiful views and follow the Panoramastrasse.

Walk towards Meilen. It goes up and down but the views are beautiful.

I spotted a restaurant in Herrliberg (Restaurant Buech on Forchstrasse 267), which à la carte dining, looked really good. The panorama was so beautiful, it looked perfect for a dinner outside in the garden.

Zurich – Limmat walk

The walk along the Limmat will bring you along different playgrounds and city badis. You will pass Wipfkingen, Hongg and the Werdinsel.

From the Schweizerisches Landesmuseum, go through the park then take the bridge. Follow the sign Kloster Weg Fahr. The road leads you to a cloister but you can stop before and do a loop, going on one side of the Limmat and take the bridge to the other side.

It is not shady all the way, so bring enough sun cream.

There are a couple of places where you can stop to eat, at the Turbinenhaus restaurant for instance and at various badi cafés.

This walk can take 2h30 minutes without going to the cloister.

Lucerne, Sonomatt

For a nice easy walk, start from the Kloster Gersliberg. Go towards the forest and follow the sign Wanderwege; don’t take the Gerlisbergstrasse. It will bring you along some farms and before you reach the private clinic on Hemschlenstrasse (where you can also park) you will find clean new benches. The view is magnificent and perfect for a pick-nick or a break.

At the clinic, there a couple of signs indicating where you can go for short walks of about 30 minutes.

From the top, you have a fantastic view of the Lake of Lucerne.

Rapperswil to Pfäffikon

The walk from Rapperswil to Pfäffikon train station or Badi is enjoyable and takes 1 hour. You will take the Jacob bridge (Holzsteg) and then follow the Seedamstrasse. The way is always flat.

Zurich – Uetliberg

While there are many walks you can do from Uetliberg, not many are optimal with strollers. However from Uetliberg train station, you can take the paved road to Uitikon Waldegg. It takes about 1 hour.

It will bring you through the forest. In the winter it is used for sledging.

You can also continue further to the Triemli train station.
