Montana for kids in the Winter

Don’t let the cold weather stop you from visiting Montana in the Winter. There are many activities you can do with your children during that time of the year.

Here are some I selected for you:

1. Charles M. Russell museum in Great Falls Montana

Visit the museum of Far West Art with painters such as Charles Russell and Olaf Seltzer and sculptor Jon Contway. Learn more about the American bison. There is a discover gallery where children can go inside of a tipi.

2. Museum of the Rockies in Bozeman Montana

This museum is one you should not miss while visiting Montana. It has one of the biggest dinosaur exhibits in the world. Replicas and fossils can be seen throughout the exhibit halls and if you are lucky you may bump into Dr Jack Horner, the famous paleontologist. As well, kids can go to the planetarium and enjoy a show. There is a special kids show on Saturday morning. Before leaving check out the discovery center.

3. First People Buffalo’s Jump State Park and Interpretive Center 

 

Despite the cold it well worth it to drive to the Buffalo Jump State Park. You can go on the mount where some of the bisons used to jump from. Don’t forget to stop at the interpretive center to learn more about Indian tribes and the buffalo stories. Children can even touch and wear the skin of a wolf.

4. Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center in Great Falls Montana

Learn about the expedition of Lewis & Clark, the Indian tribes, the buffaloes and much more. Sit down for an interesting talk at the center and learn what medicine the members used during their trip. Ask for the Junior folder: it has many activities for children which have to be done during the visit if you want to leave with a badge of a Junior Explorer.

Near the smallest world river, you can bring the children look at the many rainbow and salmons raised in the outside large containers.

Experiencing a day with the wildlife of Yellowstone in the winter is wonderful. You children will love seeing the buffaloes, elks, wolves and other animals. Stop by the interpretive hall at Old Faithful and the Young Scientist for more interesting information about the park and wildlife.

 

7. Playgrounds in Great Falls, Montana

The city has numerous nice new playgrounds inside and in outdoor parks.

 

8. Great Falls Public Library

The library offers activities for children a couple times a week.

9. Skiing in Big Sky Country near Bozeman

This is the biggest ski area in America for skiing. Although it is mainly for advanced skiers, there are still things to do for the little ones.

Try out the kids club and other activities.

 

10. Winter sports in Showdown, 1 hour from Great Falls
