PARIS: art exhibit “Impressionism and Fashion” – “L’impressionisme et la Mode”

If you are in Paris don’t miss the art exhibit  “Impressionism and Fashion” at the Musée d’Orsay.

Many renown world museums like the Hamburg Kunsthalle, the Art Institute in Chicago, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Courtault Institute in London, came together in this project. The museum in Paris is showing 60 artworks of various impressionist artists such as Pierre-Auguste Renoir, James Tissot, Berthe Morisot, Edouard Manet, Claude Monet, Alfred Stevens, Gustave Caillebotte and Mary Cassatt, but also dresses, hats and accessories of the period.

You will be able to admire the beautiful outfits that men and women had to go to the balls, operas, salons and parties.You will get to know the fashion of the women who loved to be pretty with lots of velvets, laces and taffetas. Ladies wore crinolines, bustiers, hats, leather gloves, sun umbrellas, ankle boots and pumps. Men wore pants, cardigants, jackets, redingotes, canes and hats.

Some artworks are only shown in Paris like “Nana” from Edouard Manet. “The Déjeuner sur l’herbe” from Claude Monet will leave the d’Orsay Museum for eight months.

It is the curator of the Art Institute of Chicago, Gloria Groom, who proposed the idea for such an exhibit to the Director of the Museums d’Orsay and Orangerie in Paris, Guy Cogeval. The exhibit will be in Paris until January 27th, 2013. Then it will travel to the United States. It will be first in New York at the Metropolitan Museum of Art  from February 26th to May 27th and then at The Art Institute in Chicago from June 25th to September 22nd.

To go there: 1 Rue de la Légion d’Honneur. Opening times: 9:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Closed on Mondays. On Thursdays it is opened until 9:45 p.m.
