Cameron Mackintosh’s acclaimed production of the musical LES MISÉRABLES by Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schönberg comes to Switzerland for the first time. From January 21 to February 23, 2020, the original English version will be guest at Theater 11 Zurich. The sensationally prepared story of the musical LES MISÉRABLES is based on Victor Hugo’s successful novel of the same name.
France, 1815: Jean Valjean is released after 19 years in prison. Eight years later, he managed to start a new life as a factory owner and mayor in a city just outside Paris under the wrong name. But he has an arch enemy; Inspector Javert. When Valjean’s true identity is exposed, his days seem to be numbered. Valjean has to flee. His attachment to the completely impoverished worker Fantine prevents him from facing the fanatical law enforcement officer.

Fantine dies, leaving behind her illegitimate daughter Cosette, who finds shelter in the Thénardier family’s bar. Valjean takes Cosette and flees to Paris with her. He gives all his love to the child, but never speaks openly about his past.
Cosette falls in love with the revolutionary Marius, who is chased by Javert – this is how Jean Valjean gets back in the crosshairs of his old adversary. There is a fateful encounter between the two …
Cameron Mackintosh designed this new production of LES MISÉRABLES in 2009, which has taken the world by storm ever since. After a successful tour of England, the production was celebrated by audiences and critics alike and was sold out at all venues.

The story of LES MISÉRABLES has been filmed several times. Most recently in 2012 with Hollywood greats like Anne Hathaway, Hugh Jackman and Russell Crowe.
The great score of the musical LES MISÉRABLES includes the songs “I Dreamed a Dream”, “On My Own”, “Stars”, “Bring Him Home”, “Do You Hear THE People Sing?”, “One Day More”, ” Empty Chairs at Empty Tables “,” Master Of The House “and many more. Seen by more than 120 million viewers, performed in 52 countries and translated into 22 languages, LES MISÉRABLES is undisputedly one of the most popular musicals in the world.
The successful collaboration of Cameron Mackintosh with composer Claude-Michel Schönberg and musical writer Alain Boublil resulted in several masterpieces that have gone down in musical history, including LES MISÉRABLES and MISS SAIGON.
