Today is the fifth day of the international film festival in Zurich. It has been a wonderful experience so far with great movies and documentaries.

The crowning last night was the green carpet with British actor and Academy Award winner, Jeremy Irons. He came for the Gala Premiere of his last film, Margin Call. He told reporters how much he enjoyed Zurich, the lovely day, his nice hotel and great food.

What did I see so far?

  • Take Shelter – an American psychological thriller from director, Jeff Nichols. Acting is excellent with a good plot. Suspense guaranteed until the end.
  • Summer Window – a German/Finnish drama (Fenster zum Sommer). This is the third film of the director, Hendrik Handloegten. Nina Hoss’s acting is spectacular. Great scenery and love story.
  • Page One – documentary from American director Andrew Rossi. This is an informative story about the New York Times and how it is trying to survive in a time when major newspapers are going bankrupt. How is the newspaper dealing with blogs, twitter and You Tube? Is Ipod good for the newspaper business? I loved the funny and friendly columnist, David Carr.
  • Gnarr – first documentary of Gaukur Ulfarsson, an Icelandic director. It shows how comedian, Jon Gnarr created his political party, the Best Party, and won the elections in June 2010. It had all started as a joke for Gnarr! He is now the major of Reykjavik.

  • Circumstance – a powerful film in competition for the best international feature film.  The Iranian/American director, Maryam  Keshavarz, shows how two young women fall in love and deal with their homosexuality in a land where it is strictly forbidden. A movie, which teaches about a culture unknown to most of us.

My favorite movie was Circumstance. At the end of the film the two main actresses, Nikohl Boosheri and Sarah Kazemy, came on the podium to answer questions. For twenty minutes they talked about their background, how they came to make this film, about the filming in Beirut, how the film brought them closer to their roots and about their future. Good luck to both of them and to the film!
