Family Travels: stroller friendly hikes in canton Zurich

Hiking in the Swiss countryside means going up and down hills, along rivers, lakes and on top of mountain peaks.

Children will enjoy seeing the animals and nature and adults looking at the mountainous panoramas around the lakes.

If you like hiking and are still pushing your child in a stroller, walking can be sometimes difficult if the roads are not paved. I am suggesting a list of places which are “strollers-friendly”.

Most of the time, you can come back with a train, bus or boat to your starting point if you are not planning to walk in a loop or if the children are suddenly getting tired.

Horgenberg

Key in your GPS, Moorschwand parking. From there you can take numerous hikes, paved around farms bringing you from one village to another.

You can walk to Zimmerberg but you can continue to Hirzel via the Bergstrasse and come back with the bus. You can walk to Wührenbach via the forest or take the street Maurenmoostrasse, which has beautiful views. At the end of the street in Wührenbach there is a nice playground near the school.

Zurich Klusplatz – Loorenkopf – Zoo (4.9miles/8km)

Take tram 3, 8 or 15 to Klusplatz and hike up in the direction to the forest. It is quite steep at the beginning but after that it will be flat. This walk is enjoyable, when extremely sunny out, as you will be in the forest most of the time.

It is about 45 minutes to Rest area “Ratzplatz Milan” via Biberlinstrasse and Bergstrasse. There you will find the Loorenkopf Tower with its 153 steps in the forest of Adlisberg. There is a covered place to sit, to barbecue and to rest and more tables and benches in the area.

Then, to go the zoo you will continue through the forest and take the Adlisbergstrasse. It is another 50 minutes.

From the zoo, you will find a tram to bring you back to your destination.

If you get too tired, you can use the bus to go to the Zoo, from the Dodler iceskating rink.

Lake Greifensee – Maur (5.5 miles/9 km)

Park your car at one of the parking lots outside in the village. Pay in advance but it is better to plan at least 5 hours as it takes twice as long with children.

Hike to the beautiful village of Maur and return via Fällanden to Greifensee village. Bring enough water and food with you as you will not find anything before Maur. There is a lovely self-service restaurant along the water. (Schifflaende, Seeestrasse 394, Maur).

If you want to walk along the entire lake, you will need to go another 7.4miles/12 km.

The walk from Greifensee is nice and easy as for most part the road is paved. You will go along swamps and there are many sightseeing docks, where you can sit and observe the birds.

When approaching Maur, you will pass by a couple of campgrounds. There is a playground in Maurholz campground.

Lake Hüttnersee

Located above Richterswil near Samstagern. Park at the parking lot “Bad am Hüttnersee”. The lake is small and you can go around in 30 minutes. The road is paved.

Then, you can go to the badi and have a drink at the café. It is called Badeanlage Hüttnersee in Samstagern and it is opened from May through September.

If you want you can also walk to Hütten via the Rebgarterstrasse. It takes 30 minutes to go up to Hütten.

Another nice walk from there is to go to Schönenberg. The place carries it name well, as it is really beautiful over Schönenberg. Tirggel biscuits, which you can find at every Christmas market stands in Zurich are made there on Tirggelweg.

Lake Lutzel – Lützelsee

Located North of Hambrechtikon, near Stäfa.

This is perfect if you want to bring the children out for a short walk with or without the stroller.

The lake is very small, but it has a badi: Badanstalt Lützelsee in
Hombrechtikon. There is also the possibility to do some grilling in the forest.
