Handmade with love, Ada Moarcăs and her world of amigurumi

Ada Moarcăs

Some fairies have wings, others have spades or magic powder at the tip of their fingers. Ada Moarcăs is one extraordinary fairy that breathes life into wool, cotton and thread by means of a hook.

Imagine a giant pink ant carrying a green rucksack on its back or a blue sleepy teddy bear with yellow socks but also a mole with pink nose and a blue cap. A world of tiny wonders, the world of those who cannot talk and yet so cute and adorable that we cannot resist their charms, no matter what age category we belong to. Whatever form they might take, they all have the inherent power to take us back to our childhood with its innocent dreams and images.

Antony the Anteater

The fairy, who diligently brings to life these tiny amigurumi, as if recreated from our favorite fairytales, learned how to crochet proficiently in less than two month, by means of watching online tutorials from internet. Jurist by profession, Ada like so many of us in the Helvetic medium, had to step outside her comfort zone over and over again, seeking and exploring other opportunities. This is how her wonderful crocheting journey began. She brought to surface resources and abilities she would have never thought of earlier during her life as a mother of two, wife and also a co-organizer of Public Meetings for expat women in Zurich.

Charlie the Platypus

Ever since she set foot in this dreamlike world, Ada has been participating with her funny and enchanting creations at different fairs and festivals, like Ungarnhausfest but also during celebrations at Volketswill or other places around Zürich. Her tiny animals can be purchased online as well. She has several personal brands but she can come up with cute replicas of anything you might spot in cartoons, books, magazines or online sources. When it comes to crocheting, for Ada the sky is the limit. Say it, dream it and she will bring your dreams to life by means of her magical hook but also a sprinkle of humor, talent, passion and lots of dedication.

The photos speak for themselves. Her protagonists have not only names but also cute personalities.

The Hearthy Giraffe

The miracle takes place during face-to-face meetings, when both children and parents are mesmerized by these artisanal creations. A world laced with love.

Tiny wonders, made from cotton, wool and string.

Here are some questions Ada was kind enough to answer during a short interview.

How much time do you need for an amigurumi? How long does the process of creation last in general?

In order for the finite product to immerge from the beginning to end varies quite a lot. It can last from one day or two up to a week, according to the level of difficulty. It is difficult to sum up in hours the amount of effort and work when someone is writing a story. Crocheting is similar to storytelling. You inevitably get carried away by the characters. Each amigurumi has a unique story starting from the very first thread from which it is created. Even if there are two identical models, they still have different personalities, whether in terms of the looks they give you, form of eyes, the bow of the head or just the pose of the hands, not to mention the color of the outfit, these are all very unique distinctive details that make a big difference. Nothing is a coincidence, each detail has a great deal of significance. Crocheting means playfulness, joy, happiness, relaxation, dreams and tales, all these in the same time. Once you set foot in the land of the amigurumi, smile is the ultimate ruler and once the story comes to an end you have the opportunity to offer your tiny gift to a child, who will be thrilled to engage with a new friend and run off towards new adventures.

Which are your sources of inspiration?

Everything. Inspirations is everywhere. In books of tales, cartoons, periodicals, magazines, children’s drawings, movies or they just simply come up from nowhere. I can hardly find enough time to write all of them down or draw them in my agenda. There is hardly enough time to put them in practice, especially when it comes to my own models and brands. I start from an idea, I work on the prototype, I take notes about the different stages and then comes the moment of truth when I put them to test. The final stage is the pdf and adding of photos about the different stages of the work process. It is very time consuming and detailed process but in the end you have the opportunity to share your brand new model with one of the cutest range of human beings, children.

Which is your favorite model/brand?

I don’t know if I have one in particular. I tend to fall in love with each in turns. I have favorite designers, whose brands and items I like to recreate a lot. I am inspired by Ilaria Caliri (airali_gray), Maja Hansen, Erina Lee (littleaquagirl), IlDikko Amigurumi Patterns, pica-pau and many others.

Which are the favorite ones among children?

Children do tend to have favorites and they vary according to age categories. The giraffes are always the first ones to be spotted during fairs. There was a time when dinosaurs, sheep and goats were in high demand, then came the period of seals and moles. This year I made lots of ladybirds, then comes Easter, when the Easter Bunny is in charge when choosing his typical amigurumi. During Halloween I had to put up with an army of giant spiders and ghosts but it was not long before they found their places on the shelves of little masters. Christmas brings reindeers, dwarves and gnomes but there are also crocheted globes among the toys. I never have time to get bored, I am constantly engaged in a new item. I rarely do the same model for several times. I do not like routine and I am always in search for something new, that is why I try to add original and unexpected details.
