The Beetle and the Mini are in the spotlight this year:
In 1949 the German Volkswagen, known as the Beetle arrived for the first time in the USA. Two Beetles left Holland to come to America. It started a reel Beetle Mania in the US. Everyone wanted a Beetle in the 50 & 60’s. The interest decreased but came back with the New Beetle end of the 1990’s. A new model should come out in 2011.
The mini turned 50 this year. It started when the British company BMC commercialized the Mini Classic in 1959. Then came the Mini Cooper. Today the minis are so popular that Mini Festivals are organized. I happened to drive by one of them by accident in 2005 next to the Loreley near the Rhine Valley. I found out later that it was the first Mini festival in Germany with more 1,300 Minis!
