Red Sea to Nile via Moses Mountain: like in the movies

That’s it, I finally made it to Egypt!

I spent 10 days in Sharm-el-Sheikh on the Red Sea, with a day trip to Luxor on the Nile and a hike to Moses Mountain in the Sinai.

Well before my first foot on the Egyptian soil, I had been fascinated by this mysterious country, maybe because I grew up watching movies such as “Cleopatra” (1962) with Liz Taylor or “The Ten Commandments” with Charlton Heston.

I had admired the sandy landscape of the desert numerous times in the film “Lawrence of Arabia” (1962), amazed at how Peter O’Toole could gallop so quickly on a camel.

Well, before I made it to the Nile river, I had dreamt of traveling down the river, which had inspired so many authors and filmmakers.

The Nile had always been part of my life. Movies such as “Death on the Nile” (1978) and the Agatha Christie detective novel (1937), which had inspired the movie, had carried me through my adolescence.

I still remember reading Agatha’s novel straight through, fascinated by the story and captivated by the characters and the happenings on the Nile. Since then, I had been picturing myself one day on a boat like Agatha, floating on the longest river in the world.

While looking over at the breathtaking scenery from the St. George Hotel in Luxor, with the sun setting, reflecting on the Nile and the grassy river shore of the Eastern bank, I was approached by the owner of a smaller boat, a felucca. The man proposed me to go inspect his boat to go sailing the next day.

It would be for another trip. My stay in Luxor was a short one, just a day trip from Sharm…

Until next time!
