Spreading a bit of sparkle… A closer look at the December birthstone

In many cultures birthstones are a well established tradition whereby a gem is associated with a birth month. Each stone has a special meaning and it is believed by many that wearing your birthstone will bring good fortune.

The birthstone for December, and one of my favourites, is the gorgeous hues of turquoise ! It is also the gemstone for the 11th wedding anniversary.

Turquoise is one of the most ancient gems and was popular with the ancient Egyptians and Chinese. It is considered to be a stone that brings health, good fortune and protection from evil!

The name comes from the French, pierre tourques, or Turkish stone, probably because the stone first arrived in Europe from Turkish sources. It is found in only a few places, where the earth is dry and there are copper deposits which react with minerals and turquoise is formed. Today these are mainly in Iran and the US. It is a soft stone and is easily carved, a practice which is popular in Native American jewellery.

The Swiss Blue birthstone collection for December consists bracelets and earrings created with turquoise stones and using sterling silver or gold filled beads and earhoops. Both these precious metals are hypo-allergenic and lightweight, so they are ideal for everyday wear.
