Has the School Summer break zoomed (see what I did there?!) up somewhat quicker than usual this year?
Would you like some help to arrange the perfect Summer holiday for the whole family? Seems too good to be true? Read on and relax……
As in previous weeks and topics, there are so many amazing locations in Switzerland that you could choose from for family fun, however, we are concentrating on one fantastic destination where everyone will be spoilt for choice with activities to tempt and delight children and adults of all ages.
Basing yourself in Klosters is a great idea for many of the following reasons. It lives up to its reputation of being extremely family friendly with its choice of hotels having those extra little amenities which make life easier when travelling en famille. You will of course find the necessities you expect such as free parking , Wi-Fi, child friendly menus, high chairs and babysitting (if you fancy dining à deux one evening or two?!). But what about playgrounds, indoor swimming pools (back up weather plan), table tennis, darts, mini-golf etc as well as the ultimate luxury of convenient family rooms with 2 separate bedrooms which is always helpful unless you don’t mind all hitting the sack at 8 or 9pm?
The other reason for choosing this area is for the sheer number of things to do that will definitely assist in creating the most amazing family memories.
Let’s start with Madrisa Land Adventure Park where the only problem I see might be dragging your children away. Following a 12 minute ride up on the cable car from Klosters, here you and your children can let off steam at around 1900 metres above sea level. If you visit for the day then you may have to factor in retuning later during your visit, or, you could stay overnight here in a Teepee or the first tree huts in Switzerland. It’s hard to imagine what could be more thrilling for a child then staying in a tree house on a mountain side on holiday?! Just imagine the stories they will have to entertain their classmates in September. And if that wasn’t enough there is also a petting zoo, various easy hiking trails and the thrill seekers can take an adrenaline filled scooter ride back to the valley.
*Note that the park will partially open on 27th June with some renovations taking place and will be fully open on 11th July.
Back down in the valley, a day or two at the lakeside might be a welcome break from the adventure, but this certainly does not mean hours of inactivity and boredom, unless that is what you are looking for? You can opt for all the usual water sports such as Wake boarding, pedal boats, paddle boards, kayaks and because the lake catches the prevailing breezes it is also a great sailing and windsurfing spot.
Lido Klosters is a great choice for a fun family day out in a stunning location where the swimming pool and lake merge into one. A water slide, covered children’s pool for the smallest members, a four metre high climbing wall rising out of the diving pool and a child friendly restaurant are all on site along with beach volleyball of course.
Another wellness and pleasure pool centre in Davos this time, is the fabulously named “eau-là-là” with it’s jacuzzi, solariums, open air steam baths, kids splashing area and well deserved relaxation areas.
Maybe at this point, you might be craving something a little less entirely child centric for a few hours, then why not head to the highest brewery in Europe at Monstein? There are 2 ways of visiting with free visits and beer tastings possible every Friday from 4-7pm which could be a great start to the weekend. Or you can book a nostalgic trip up to the brewery as part of the Davos Summer Active programme, details can be found on the Davos tourism website. They also have a shop selling cheese and chocolate, ok no surprises there but still means something potentially for all the family while you check out the fabulous craft delicacies.
Other activities to fit into your schedule could be the Adventure Park Davos Farich, a family pleasing high wire and cycling park. It has a special children’s course for 4 – 8 year olds, 2 playgrounds, a BBQ area and a restaurant. COVID measures put in place mean that it is necessary to book ahead and to take your own hand disinfectant, however I feel we are all pretty used to that these days?
Whilst in this region, it would be pretty remiss to not mention the incredible hiking and climbing opportunities in the area, particularly the climbing garden and climbing walls on the rocks of the Seehorn, roughly an hours walk from Davos and the several fabulous themed hikes combining the great outdoors, exercise and education, what’s not to like?
Did you know that when staying overnight in a hotel in the area you will receive the new Davos Klosters Premium card ? Offering numerous discounts and free public transport, one free benefit of the card and a massive attraction if you have any train lovers in the family, is the cult locomotive “crocodile” which runs twice daily from Davos Platz to Filisur through the Summer season, the 40 minute journey is entirely free with the card. How great is that?!
Finally a great idea and way to potentially tick off a bucket list item for train lovers of all ages, could be to base your itinerary around a few days in the area and then hop on the Glacier Express or the Bernina Express for a few days in Italy or St. Moritz? Children under 6 travel for free and what a truly iconic Swiss mountain family adventure.
