Last night in the beautiful studios of SRG SSR in Zurich the wrestler Christian Stucki and the sprinter Mujinga Kambundji were awarded the titles of Swiss athletes of 2019. The Crédit Suisse Sports Awards ceremony, presented by Sandra Studer and Rainer Maria Salzgeber, was broadcasted live from 8:05 pm on SRF 1, RTS Two and RSI LA 2.
The 5 nominees for the best woman athlete were Belinda Bencic (tennis), Wendy Holdener (alpine skiing), Mujinga Kambundji (athletics), Léa Sprunger (athletics), Corinne Suter (alpine skiing) and Daniela Ryf (triathlon). The female athlete of the year is Mujinga Kambundji. Among many achievements she won a bronze medal for her 200 meters race at the World Championships in Qatar.
In the category best male nominees, it is Christian Stücki, who won the award with 30%, followed by the 9th time winner Roger Federer 21.59 % and last year´s winner Nino Schurter. Stücki is the first wrestler to ever receive the prize as the best Swiss athlete of the year. At 34 he won Kilchberg and the festival of l’Unspunnen, making him the oldest winning wrestler. The nominees in that category were Jérémy Desplanches (swimming), Roger Federer (tennis), Beat Feuz (alpine skiing) Nino Schurter (mountain bike), Christian Stucki (wrestler), Julien Wanders (athletics).
Manuela Schär (athletics, world champion of marathon and unbeaten for the last 19 months) is the Paralympian athlete of 2019, elected with 23.5%, followed by Theo Gmür with 26.5 % (alpine ski, gold medal winner in downhill and Super G at World Championships and silver medal for slalom geant) and 7 times winner, Marcel Hug (athletics,) with 15.3 %. Schär, who won the prize for the first time, was deeply moved and extremely proud at the end of the ceremony.
The best trainer of the year is Adrian Rothenbühler with 16% of votes. He is the coach of the woman athlete of 2019, Mujinga Kambundji. In second position came Nicolas Siegenthaler, the trainer of Nino Schurter, with 13.6%, followed by Michael Suter, the coach of the national handball team with 11.3%.
The best team elected is the 4X100 m Staffel Frauen, Ajla Del Ponte, Sarah Atcho, Mujinga Kambundji and Salomé Kora (athletics) with 18.8 %, followed by Team Schweiz (alpine skiing) 11.9 % and the BSC Young Boys (Football) 10.1 %.
The winner of the new category of the year “MVP of the year” (most valuable team player) is Roman Josi. The captain of the NHL Nashville Predators won with 43 % and heard about his election while arriving at his hotel in New York. In second position arrived Clint Capela (Houston Rockets) with 19.3 % and Pascal Meier (floorball) with 16.4%.
There were interviews on the stage of all present nominees and those missing left a video message or were called live. The athletes missing were Roger Federer (tennis), Roman Josi (icehockey),Corinne Suter (alpine skiing), Wendy Holdener, Jeremy Desplanches (swimming) and Beat Feuz (ski alpine skiing).
Swiss singers Stress with JP Cooper, Adel Tawil and music composer Christoph Walter performed on stage during the evening.
The next Crédit Suisse Sports Awards will be back next year on December 13th 2020.
