Hundreds of gospel and soul fans were at the Zurich Congress hall last night to listen and give a warm welcome to Queen Esther Marrow. She had come with the Harlem Gospel Singers to present her newest tour “A Wonderful World”.
For those who don’t know Queen Esther Marrow she is an American gospel, soul, blues and jazz singer originally from Virginia. After years of singing experience she founded the group the Harlem Gospel Singers in 1992. Since she has travelled across the world and performed in front of millions of enthusiastic people. She has met many personalities, Presidents and First Ladies such as the Clinton and Bush and Popes such as Jean-Paul II.
On her way to Basel, Switzerland, and before starting a long tour throughout Germany, Queen Esther sung in Zurich for two nights in a row. She arrived on the stage with a beautiful long white party dress, all glittering, and she continued changing her outfits during the entire two hours. For the finale, she had on an orange dress, shining like a queen!
She knows Zurich quite well she said, having been there so many times during the last twenty years.
Just like her entire troupe, Queen Esther Marrow had so much energy that one would never know she is over seventy years old. It was like fire on stage. She electrified the crowd with her powerful voice in a matter of minutes. She was there with her babies as she calls them, 8 singers and 6 musicians. She does not have just any singers and musicians, but only the best, extraordinary people just like her.
They were special moments to remember like the liveliness performance of Roni Suzette Montgomery, the acapella in memory of old gospel masters, the poignant tribute to Whitney Houston with Lenard Bonner, the amazing performances of saxophonist Marquis Sayles (newest addition to the Harlem Gospel Singers) and pianist and singer Terry Burrus, the beautiful singing act of Rodley Archie “I believe” and of course Queen Esther with “What a Wonderful World” (1967) and “O Happy Day” (1967).
The concert was inspiring, harmonious, moving and joyful.
If you could only go to one gospel concert in your lifetime, the Queen Esther Marrow and her Harlem Gospel Singers Show should definitely be the one.
