A few years ago, when we arrived in Zurich, my husband bought me for a special occasion a large box of Luxemburgerli.
He said eat them slowly!
Just one bite and I understood why it is Sprungli’s best sold product.
According to their website it sells about 1430 pounds (650 kg) daily.
The Luxemburgerli are sweets which you will not likely forget one you have tried one.
They are small macaroons made of two crunchy meringues on the outside with a soft cream in the inside. Really they are made in all the flavors you can think of like chocolate, cappuccino, lemon, raspberry, caramel/fleur de sel with some seasonal ones like chestnut, champagne and mandarin.
Since that day, I have gone back to the various Sprungli stores to purchase Luxemburgerli and not only for occasions. You don’t even need to buy a small, medium or large box. Sprungli will let you buy just one if you prefer!
While you can keep them in the fridge up to 3 days, for most people they are gone in 1 or 2 days.
But how did the macaroon get its name?
More than 50 years ago in 1957,Camille Studer, working for Sprungli in Namur started to make them. As it was made in Luxembourg, the new creation was called Luxemburgerli. It only became a real success in Switzerland over the years.
No matter what you try, it will be hard not to come back. Despite the long macaroons counter, it is always crowded with people who came to have a look if not to purchase some Luxemburgerli.
So be prepared to queue when going to Sprungli!
I love stopping by the vitrine when I am on Paradeplatz to check out the displays. Lately I noticed a new gold brushed Luxemburgerli. One more on my list to try!
