Fascinated by alpine lakes, when I heard about lake Trubsee I absolutely had to go there.
When is the best time to go:
So I did some research to make sure we could go there with our son and when the best time would be. Unfortunately the path is covered with snow most of the year.
Last time I check after Easter it was still snowy and just above freezing.
So you have to be quite spontaneous and go when the snow has melted and the weather forecast is good.
The best time to go is from May through September but make sure to check temperatures. Always bring a wind breaker or light raincoat if you are planning to go early or to come back late.
Also if you wait until the cable cars schedule has changed to summer, you will be able to stay much longer and not have to rush back down
Where is it?
For those of you not familiar with the area, Trubsee is a tiny lake located above the village of Engelberg in the canton of Obwalden.
It lies at 5899 feet (1795 m) so you can either reach it by foot or by gondola.
First you have to drive to Engelberg which is about 30 minutes passed Lucerne.
How to get there:
Drive to Engelberg -Titlis Rotair
Gerschnistrasse 1
Engelberg
If you are coming from Zurich, it should take only 1h15 minutes.
There is a large parking for cars. You pay 5 CHF in order to exit.
Going up to Trubsee takes about 20 minutes with the gondola. It makes one stop on the way.
When you arrive you will not know where to look as the scenic views of the mountains are breathtaking.
Reasons to go to Trubsee:
The reasons people come to Trubsee are various:
We arrived around lunch time so we pick-nicked on the beach just where you can start the walk on either direction. There is a place to sit and barbecue. There are other places around the lake too. Wood for buring is available next to each campfire so you just need to bring the meat. On the left side on the way to the restaurant Aplstübli, you will find many wooden tables.
If you want to hike with a stroller, you should take a 3 wheeler. Some parts are quite difficult. It will take you about 1 hour. With our son which is almost 3 years old, it took us 1h20 minutes. He walked most of the way.
Boating experience on Trubsee:
As the weather was nice and the water was peaceful, we rented a row boat and used it for 2 hours. It costs 10 CHF per hour and you pay when you are done. There is a little box where the boat is attached to. When we went there, there was only 1 boat but we noticed new boats were being brought in. The entire boating experience was positive. It allowed us to view every corner of the lake slowly and to enjoy the mountainous panorama with icy patches reflecting into the lake.
What about playgrounds and children’s activities:
There is a small but nice playground at the restaurant Alpstübli and a play area where the river runs into the lake on the left side. There are a few activities for children to do around the lake. The activities teach you how to have a balance meal and how important water is, etc… Follow the signs called Knorrli Erlebsnisweg. Children can play with or in the water in many places. They can also run safely almost everywhere along the lake.
Cows run freely there around Trubsee. You can see them drinking water in the lake or sitting down near you. They are peaceful and look like they are used to the hikers.
In July, the fields are covered with wild mountain flowers. There are so many different types and each time there is a new one, you can see a sign next to it. There are flowers I had never seen before around alpine lakes.
When we left at 5:00 p.m. it was getting cloudy and it was about to thunder.
For those who want to take pictures, go there early in the morning or later in the afternoon as there are many photo opportunities along the lake.
I wish you a great time in Trubsee if you have the chance to go there some day.
How much does it cost:
53 CHF for 2 adults to go up, using a Halbtax Abo discount. Children under 6 don’t pay.
