Zurich is once again getting ready for its international film festival.
Seven years ago, Switzerland started a new International film festival in Zurich in addition to the open air film festival in Locarno. Its main objective is to promote films from young film directors.
It had some ups and downs with the arrest of Director Roman Polanski at the Zurich Airoport in 2009. The same year the President of the Jury, Till Schweiger, had to be replaced at the last minute due to flu symptoms.
The last three years the festival has been giving a Golden Icon Award each year. In 2008, Silvester Stallone got it. In 2009, it was the turn of Morgan Freeman and last year it was Michael Douglas (picked up by his friend, Dany Devito).
Who will have the Golden Icon this year? It has been recently announced that US actor Sean Penn will receive a life work achievement award.
President of the Jury: actor Laurence Fishburne (USA)
Opening Movie: new film “Contagion” from USA director from Atlanta, Georgia, Steven Soderbergh. Matt Damon, Jude Law and Kate Winslet play in this new 2011 thriller.
How long will it last? 11 days
Red carpet: it is too early to know which stars are expected to be on the Red Carpet. Check back later for regular updates. But at least you will be able to get a glimpse at Sean Penn if you get there early enough.
Every year the festival pays tribute to a film director. In recent years it went to Roman Polanski in 2009 and Milos Forman in 2010.
If you are interested you can buy tickets online or during the opening hours at the ticket booth like in front of the Credit Suisse starting on September 8th.
Enjoy the 7th Zurich International Film Festival!
P.S: It has just been announced: Canadian director & screenwriter Paul Haggis will receive a tribute award on the closing night on October 1st.
