Spreading a bit of sparkle…  A closer look at the November birthstone

In many cultures birthstones are a well established tradition whereby a gem is associated with a birth month.  Each stone has a special meaning and it is believed by many that wearing your birthstone will bring good fortune.

The birthstone for November is the sunny Citrine and it is also the gemstone for the 13th wedding anniversary!

The name, citrine, is derived from the French word for lemon (citron) and is in fact the pale yellow to brownish orange type of quartz.  It is actually quite rare to find it and today most of the citrine in the marketplace is heat treated amethyst (another variety of quartz).

It is mined in Brazil, Bolivia, Spain, Madagascar, Mexico and Uraquay.  Some of the Bolivian mines produce amethyst and citrine in the same crystal, called ametrine which is a lovely combinate of lemon and violet.

The Swiss Blue birthstone collection for November consists of bracelets and earrings created with citrine semi-precious stones and using sterling silver or gold filled beads and earhoops. Both these precious metals are hypo-allergenic and lightweight, so they are ideal for everyday wear.
