Spreading a bit of sparkle… A closer look at the March birthstone By Liz Le Feuvre of Swiss Blue

In many cultures birthstones are a well established tradition whereby a gem is associated with a birth month.  Each stone has a special meaning and it is believed by many that wearing your birthstone will bring good fortune.

The birthstone for March is the one of my all time favourite semi-precious stones, the delicate Aquamarine.

The name Aquamarine comes from the Latin for seawater and the stone is traditionally known for bringing protection to sailors and fishermen with it’s powers of bringing calm and tranquillity, both to the seas, and to those who wear it.

Aquamarine belongs to the beryl mineral family.  Within this same mineral family, there is a green variety which is better known as emerald, and a lesser known pale pink variety, which is the very pretty Morganite.  The blue colour of aquamarine comes from iron impurities within the stone and the blues can range from very pale to deeper blues.  Generally, the deeper the colour, the more valuable the stone.

The world’s largest source of aquamarine is found in Brazil and it can been found in large sizes, the largest one discovered is the Dom Pedro aquamarine at 10,000 carats!

Aquamarine’s are very hard wearing and so are a hugely popular choice for jewellery!

The Swiss Blue birthstone collection consists of bracelets and earrings created with the semi-precious birthstone and using sterling silver or gold filled beads and earhoops. Both these precious metals are hypo-allergenic and lightweight, so ideal for everyday wear.
