Spreading a bit of sparkle… A closer look at the February birthstone By Liz Le Feuvre of Swiss Blue

In many cultures birthstones are a well established tradition whereby a gem is associated with a birth month.  Each stone has a special meaning and it is believed by many that wearing your birthstone will bring good fortune.

The birthstone for February is the vibrant Amethyst. This is the purple variety of the quartz mineral species and is fairly commonly found, and so is an affordable semi-precious stone, and a stunning addition to any jewellery collection!  It is currently mostly mined in Africa, South America and the US. In one mine in Bolivia, amethyst and citrine co-exist in the same crystal and are called ametrine. This half purple and half yellow stone is becoming increasingly popular.

The name “amethyst” comes from the Greek amethystos, which means “a remedy against drunkenness”!  Very fitting for the birthstone that comes after dry January! Because of its wine-like colour, early Greek mythology associated amethysts with Bacchus, the god of wine.  Amethyst is also believed to keep the wearer clear headed and quick witted in battle and business affairs!

February is also the month where we celebrate Valentine’s and the patron saint of romantic love, St Valentine, wore an amethyst ring carved with the image of cupid.
