Spreading a bit of sparkle… A closer look at the August birthstone By Liz Le Feuvre of Swiss Blue

In many cultures birthstones are a well established tradition whereby a gem is associated with a birth month.  Each stone has a special meaning and it is believed by many that wearing your birthstone will bring good fortune.

The birthstone for August is the striking green Peridot!  Appropriately for a summer birthstone, it is also known as the “Gem of the Sun”

Peridot is the gem variety of the mineral olivine. Its chemical composition includes iron and magnesium, and it is the iron that creates the yellowish green colors. The gem often occurs in volcanic rocks and are usually mined in the United States, China and Vietnam.  Occasionally, they have been found in meteorites too!

Peridot has historically been associated with light and it was believed that it would protect the wearer during the night.  It was the Egyptians who called it the “gem of the sun.”

The Swiss Blue birthstone collection for August consists bracelets and earrings created with semi-precious Peridot stones and sterling silver or gold filled beads and earhoops. Both these precious metals are hypo-allergenic and lightweight, so they are ideal for everyday wear.
