Adam Brody – importance of consulting clients, fairness & sustainability

Vivamost met with fashion designer Adam Brody in his shop in Zurich a few days ago before his photo shoot with Viktoria Toth. We saw how the well-established designer works and advised his model with the various clothes of the new season.

The British/Israeli Designer with 27 years experience in the fashion business has been in Zurich at the location on Stockerstrasse 48 for 12 years now. His Flagship store, just a few minutes by foot from the famous Paradeplatz, is very convenient and easy to find.

We loved his store as it is spacious, bright and very exclusive. Adam has a great selection of blouses, dresses, pants, blazers and tee-shirts in black & white but also in many attractive colours. He carries both business, day-to-day clothes and cocktail and gala dresses.

In 2001 Adam launched his namesake collection under the motto STYLE HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH SIZE.

Adam Brody´s brand specialises in plus sizes going from 42-52 and in tee-shirts with smaller sizes starting with 38 & 40. He mentioned he would love to offer smaller sizes as well but it would need a different capacity, and volume, so at the moment, he offers further sizes custom made, (without a surcharge!)

Regarding his collections he said he constantly creates & produces from single “one of” pieces, to small series of 2 or 3 pieces in each size. His clothes are concepted in such style, that they don´t run out of fashion, so one can wear them in various combinations for a few seasons.

Sustainability is also a word he used a lot. “I have actually been focusing on sustainability since ever, it is the way I grew up, and a value that is very important to me, so it naturally belongs in the DNA of the brand. Every piece is made in our atelier, or in small private factories where the working conditions are fair and friendly, the workers are not underpaid, and the spirit is familiar and responsible. I believe that designer clothing has a soul, it reflects on the person wearing it much more than coverage or decoration, it also reflects a feeling, a value, it supports in some manner the person wearing it, my vision of sustainability, of the “cleanliness” of the garment is the sum up of the materials, how they are produced, delivered, and how well and long they can be of use.”

Adam is a hard working man, busy in his shop from about 7.30 am to the closure of his shop at 6.30 pm, sometimes even later if he has a photo shoot. He confessed working seven days a week and around 60 hours a week. He has a bit more freedom to do so since his two children are grown up.

Despite the fact he has one seamstress and one trainee, it is pretty much a one man show, he told us. Directly connected to the shop he has his atelier, the heart of the business, which he showed us proudly, with many sewing machines and tables to prepare the prototypes and store additional fabrics.

Adam is a multi-tasker from designing clothes, selling, making promotions, going on photo shoots and advising his clients. Consulting is extremely important he added and it is not something you get everywhere.

He shows his clients what would make them feel well and attractive, how and why it is made so, and how one can combine, use otherwise, and get the maximum out of the look, while still being your own self, clothes should serve empower and flatter people, and in an uncomplicated way help them be their best daily self:”

He shared as example one lady who came to his shop, looking for something for her wedding. He helped her dare to wear a dress even though she never wears dresses. She was surprised, but felt amazingly well in it, and called later to thank for the style boost, the comfort and the compliments she got. Without proper consulting, the lady would have probably ended up buying a pair of pants.

During the pandemic time Adam started his online shop and has added a few products to the collection. He finds some clothes are more difficult to sell online and believes in the importance of getting close to the touch and feel of the fabric and the correct fit of the garment, which “on floor”(offline) can be adjusted, and therefore would and are better when tried in the shop. But he knows that more and more people are buying online these days.

We had a fun time discovering who Adam Brody is and what is important to him. We found him very professional, easy-going, patient, sympathetic with always a smile on his face.

We highly recommend his shop to any of our readers.
