If you are looking to visit beautiful castles, parks, baths, towns on the river or just wanting to hike, Hesse is definitely a place to come.
Follow my tour of the state:
Known for its spas and baths, the town is also enjoyable for strolls. Walk through the old downtown to the Schloss Park. Then go to the Kur Park, which has the oldest golf club in Germany and a beautiful Russian orthodox chapel. Restaurants on the Promenade are amazing, no matter if you choose Asian, Italian or Spanish.
There are many hikes to do around the area in the Taunus forest.
If you are an Elvis fan, you probably know that Elvis lived there during his time in the U.S. Army. Albert Einstein visited there too. Don’t miss the park of the Sprudelhof, built at the beginning of the 20th century, a fantastic example of Jugendstil art. The town is known for its salt baths, which have been offered to the public since 1835.
It is the kind of town, you always have pleasure going back to. Located about 45 minutes away from Frankfurt am Main, it has a lovely old town.
Worth seeing are the quarter of Mathildenhöhe, the Russian chapel, the old city hall and the Hundertwasser house.
It is the town of skyscrapers for banks and other major businesses. Frankfurt has an amazing palm garden, which I recommend especially during the time of the dahlias in the Fall. If you love museums, the city offers many such as the Städel (art from the 14th century to now). Stroll around the Römer especially at Christmas time is a must.
If you want to make a nice excursion from Frankfurt, Fulda is a good choice. There is a lot to do if you like churches, parks and castles. The orangerie is beautiful.
This is an open air park opened all year long, ideal for families with children as there are many farm animals and places to run around. You can easily spend the day there.
Built for the elector Wilhem I, the park will enchant you even on a rainy day! I loved the water gardens with all its fountains, aqueducts, waterfalls, bridges and historical buildings.
The medieval castle and the old town are a plus. The country side and wooded views of the Taunus from Königstein are breathtaking.
If in the area, why not stop for a drink in the old town and wander to the castle? Around Kronberg, there are numerous hikes you can do.
Wander through the old town, the old bridge on the Lahn river and enter the Saint George medieval cathedral.
You will fall in love with the old medieval and walled downtown the minute you enter it. It has many museums, superb half-timbered houses and great views over the Fulda river.
The castle and exhibits is what is left of the Roman Empire in the region on the limes. The wooded alley entrance in the fall is breathtaking.
Located in the Lahn valley 43 miles (70 km) from Frankfurt am Main, the old town has many well preserved buildings. The tourist office organizes tours following Goethe’s footsteps, of the churches and also a children’s tour.
So I hope you will have gathered many excursions ideas.
