The Berlinale begins tonight

The 62nd International Film Festival in Berlin, known as the Berlinale, starts tonight on February 9th. It will last 11 days. The president of the jury is the British Film Director, Mike Leigh.

This year again many stars are expected to walk on the Red Carpet at the Berlinale Palast in Potsdamer Platz: Angelina Jolie, Isabelle Huppert, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Shah Rukh, Keanu Reeves, Billy Bob Horton and Merryl Streep.

US actress, Merryl Streep known for movies such as “Out of Africa” (86) and “The bridges of Madison County” (95) will receive the Honorary Golden Bear for her life achievement. The ceremony will take place on Valentine Day at the Berlinale Palast.

Tonight the Film Festival will present the film of Benoit Jacquot “Les adieux de la reine”. Other international movies in competition are:

  • Extremely Loud and Incredible Close from Stephen Daldry with Tom Hanks and Sandra Bullock
  • Barbara from Christian Petzold with Nina Hoss
  • Jayne Mansfiel’s car from Bill Bob Thornton with Kevin Beacon and Robert Duvall

This year the Berlinale has planned many films, shorts, forums and discussions about the Arab Spring. As well the nuclear disaster of Fukushima will be approached in a film.
