What does Muesli mean?
If you have never heard of the word Muesli, it means mixture. It is a mixture of uncooked rolled oats and wheat grains.
I recently found out that Bircher Muesli actually was invented in Zurich, Switzerland.
Who invented Bircher Muesli?
The man who invited it at the beginning of the 1900’s is the doctor, Maximillian Bircher-Benner. He had eaten Muesli for the first time during a hike in the mountains. After an illness, he took conscience of the importance of fruits and vegetables. He believed apples saved him.
He worked in the sanatorium on Zuricherberg and spent time studying nutrition and diet plans. He gave some to his patients.
What do we need for a Bircher Muesli?
What we need for a good Bircher Muesli are grains, nuts, fruits (dried or/and fresh), lemon juice and some liquid (milk). Some add yogurt or quark. You can put a little bit of honey or sugar.
Bircher Muesli is good for breakfast but also for a light dinner. Since my 2 year old has tried it, he wants it every night!
Let me tell you how I make my Bircher Muesli
What you need:
5.3 oz (150 g) of grains
8.8 oz (250 g) of quark
3.2 oz (90 g) of apple or about 1 apple
1 tablespoon of lemon juice
10.7 fluid oz (315 ml)
2 tablespoons of sugar
4.2 oz (120 g) frozen berries
How do you make it:
1. Take a bowl and defreeze the berries.
2. Take a large serving bowl. Put your grains, quark, lemon juice, sugar and 8.4 oz (250ml) of milk and mix well.
2. After a few hours add more milk about 2.10 fluid oz (65 ml) and the berries.
3. Before serving add the shredded apple. Check the consistency. If it is too thick, add more milk. You can add more sugar too depending on your taste.
If you children or yourself do not care too much for berries, don’t put any but more apples and other fresh or dried fruits. Bananas are excellent.
I always use a packet mixture, which has the grains (oats and wheat) and nuts already in. If you prefer doing it alone, buy the gains and put whatever nuts you want to go in it.
