Véronique Gray finds a place that’s good for all seasons
Whether you’ re skiing or looking for an alpine resort for the off-season, Megève could be the place to go.
France has many beautiful resorts with much to offer, but when the children are back in school, some resorts tend to become quite sleepy. In Megève, it is not the case. As many French have secondary residences in Megève, the place continues to stay alive.
The resort is easily reachable by car and only a few minutes away from the highway. Megève is all you may have heard or have read about: a touristy, chic and welcoming resort.
In the winter, it is an exclusive wintersport station. It has many upscale hotels but comfortable chalets or moderate priced hotels are also available for rent.
If you are planning to shop, the fashionable brand name boutiques such as Hugo Boss and Timberland are well represented. But window-shopping is also just as fun. There are numerous gourmet specialty stores you can go to, specializing in mountain ham, dry sausage, honey and regional wines.
Creameries are good places to buy your favourite mountain cheese. I found an excellent place called Crèmerie & Epicerie Gaiddon in the centre.
The main square in Megève is very wide. When the weather is good, people sit outside the restaurants and cafes’ terraces. Stroll around the town, which is very flowery in the summer- the resort has earned three flowers out of the four one can get. The pedestrian zone has very old and charming narrow streets from which one can continue to admire the alpine hills surrounding the village. You will cross a stream at some point and cross stoned bridges.
Mevège is also very reputed for its haute cuisine and many renowned chefs have their restaurant in town. If you prefer a more cosy type atmosphere for dinner, the resort offers other more relaxed places.
