How to organize your closet forever

The reason to do it

One of the worst things that can happen to any of us in the morning is not having anything to wear. It drains our energy, perhaps we want to cry, we feel desperate, and usually it ruins the morning as we grow cranky…

However, investing a little bit of time organizing our wardrobes can simplify our days and mornings, build our confidence by finding what suits us best and boost our moral up.

You probably have already read lots of articles and/or books about multiple organizing methods, as it is on the order of the day. There are lots of different ways to organize a closet, you just have to find the one you think will work best for you and adapt it to suit your lifestyle. I’m going to suggest some guidelines bellow, so you can improve your closet and build it to your image.

First things first

You will have to take everything out, remove every piece of clothing out of its place. Yep, it can be overwhelming, but it’s essential to have a wider image of everything you own and separate it by categories. You should check every single garment for defects, signs of wear, are they in good shape? Do they still fit you? Do you still like them? If the answer is affirmative, you should put it in its place. Whatever’s not fitting, faulty or you simply don’t love anymore, shouldn’t have a place in your closet, so put them apart to either fix or give away.

Buying clothes Hangers is essential

Another underappreciated item that you should invest in is hangers. If they’re the same shape and size, your closet and clothes will improve visually, they will immediately seem neat and in the place.

3 piles: to donate, to fix or to stay

While you’re taking everything out, you should separate the items in two big categories: warmer and cooler days. Inside those two you should separate clothes by activity: work, leisure, exercise, beach, vacations, ski, and so on… Afterwards, you should divide them by family: trousers, blouses, dresses, shorts, etc… and you should do this for every family of clothing that you have. As I said before, and I cannot stress this enough, you should customize the separation according to your own life.

Everything has a home

It’s important that everything has its own place, for example, all long sleeves should be apart of the short ones. Jeans and trousers shouldn’t be together also, and the same goes for long and short dresses. If you want to step up, you can also separate by colour, that way it’s easier to find any item that you are looking for as well as mix and match an outfit by the morning.

Seasonal items

You should also consider what you use more and what do you use less. Seasonal clothing and everything you don’t use often should be stored in the highest part of your closet. For example, during the Winter you don’t go to the pool often, meaning you should put away bikinis and swimming gear in a basket or a box in the higher shelves. Also, if you have cocktail dresses that you rarely have the occasion to wear, try to store them in containers or clothing bags, so they can be protected, and they don’t confuse you in the morning.

Finding the best place

Look at your closet and think where it might be better to put gym clothes or work clothes, what makes more sense to you? Is it better to put it on hangers or on shelves/drawers?

Try to fold the garments evenly whether you’re using the drawers or the hangers, there are lots of folding techniques, you can use the one you think it’s easier for you and remember to stick to it every time you are doing your laundry, that way everything will continuously looking amazing. You can also use a magazine or a piece of cardboard to help you with that task.

The shoes

All the shoes should be in the lower part of the closet and remember, they should be clean before you store them. You can organize them also by colour or type, and if you have the space and it makes sense to you, sort them by look. For example: all the gym clothes should be near the sneakers. All this will make your life easier and save your precious time.

If you actually made it to cleaning and organizing your whole closet, you should be proud of you and try to keep it that way, it’s easier than you think. You just need to focus and keep these ideas.

Also, whenever you buy something new, you should put another thing away. Try to have a bag or a basket in your closet that can help reminding you of that. When you have something that you don’t want anymore, not in a great condition or don’t fit anymore, put it in the basket, when it’s full, you just have to take it to a place where you can discard them.
