Spreading a bit of sparkle… A closer look at the July birthstone

In many cultures birthstones are a well established tradition whereby a gem is associated with a birth month.  Each stone has a special meaning and it is believed by many that wearing your birthstone will bring good fortune.

The birthstone for July is the red hot ruby – the perfect stone for hot summer days!  It’s also the gemstone traditionally given for fortieth wedding anniversaries.

Rubies are one of the corundum mineral species, which also includes sapphire.  Trace elements in the corundum are what causes variations in its colour.  Traces of chromium create the red hues which we call rubies.  The colours can range from orangey red to purplish red.  The most renowned rubies come from Myanmar, the Himalayas and Vietnam and it is one of the world’s hardest stones, with only moissanite and diamonds being harder.

In Sanskrit, ruby is ratnaraj, meaning king of the gems and it has retained that label today.  They can command one of the highest per-carat prices  of any coloured stone.  They are seen as a symbol of passion, wealth and success, and make an idea gift.
