Summer colour scoop – Dusty pastels

Who should be wearing this sophisticated mega trend to bring on the heat?

It feels so good to wear colour! Feeling tempted by dusty pastels and wonder if they are for you? This is not surprising as this trend has been all over the stores from sportswear to swimwear to shoes to daywear- practically everywhere! Let me take the agony out of your fashion decision. Knowing which colours suit you takes all the fear of being a fashion victim, and helps you to step out with confidence, loving what you saw in the mirror this morning.

To help you navigate through the current colour trends, I have written a series with four of the biggest directions and put them into easy-to-identify families. For each of these, you will see a description of who would best suit these colours, and who should avoid them. These are not the over-simplified and often misleading tips you usually get in fashion or beauty editorials such as “all blondes should wear X and all brunettes should wear Y”. You are unique – take a good look in the mirror, noting your hair and eye colour, and use this comparison to measure of whether a colour works for you or not.

Sophisticated, romantic and nostalgic, dusty pastels remind us of the old-world charm of an Italian seaside village. Who wouldn’t want to get a slice of la dolce vita? Good news for those with subtle colouring! You will have a low contrast look, either because of your gentle eye colour  such as olive or soft green-blue hue, or mid toned bronde (light brown/dark blonde) hair! You might have felt quite overwhelmed by over bright colour purchases in the past, but you can own this megatrend, because these colours are just the right level for you. Those with Beige-grey-hair  (a soft, yellowish-grey mix), will also look great in this colour scheme.

If your eyes are is soft as described above, but you hair has warm red or golden tones – you will also wear this colour family well, however you would do best to replace gulf blue with petrol blue. Those with soft but cool appearance with silver grey or ash-brown hair and smokey blue-grey eyes should avoid the golden yellow, heat haze.

A word of caution if you had dark hair and dark eyes. You would do best to pair these with a stronger or darker shade. On you, they tend to be middling and boring worn alone. See my colour article on opulent exotics for your best look.

Those who should avoid dusty pastel look altogether, are the striking beauties with noticeable eyes. You have a high contrast look with striking eyes and dark brunette, red, light blonde or silver hair. Wearing this colour scheme will look underwhelming and muddy next to your vibrant colour. In short: you would be underselling yourself in these colours. If you already own items in these muted colours, you will want to add something bright to jazz it up.
