Three-generation trio Hope, Harrell and Lando

The Beethoven year 2020 is celebrated not only in the composer’s home country, but all over the world. The Zurich Chamber Orchestra will also play several concerts in Beethoven’s honor in 2019/20 – one of them on January 14th. For this purpose, Music Director Daniel Hope invites the US cellist Lynn Harrell and the young piano talent Maxim Lando to Zurich as part of his concert series “Hope and Friends”.

For composers, chamber music is what the sketchbook is for painters: a creative playground to explore new boundaries. Against the background of the Beethoven anniversary in 2020, it is worth taking a look at the often radical chamber music works by the master from Bonn. The ZKO, Daniel Hope and the two guest soloists Lynn Harrell and Maxim Lando have chosen Beethoven’s Grosse Fuge, the «Gassenhauer Trio» and the «Triple Concerto» for their concert.

Hope, Harrell and Lando are three generations on January 14th together. The only 17-year-old pianist and shooting star Maxim Lando was supported by Daniel Hope from an early age. His appearance as the left piano hand of the injured Lang Lang in New York’s Carnegie Hall (2017) will never be forgotten. Lynn Harrell and Daniel Hope met for the first time in 1994: Harrell became rector of the Royal Academy of Music in London, Hope was one of his students. «He invited me to play the Brahms violin concerto with the student orchestra, which he himself conducted. It was the beginning of a long friendship, and many chamber music concerts followed, »recalls Hope. «Since I became Music Director of the Zurich Chamber Orchestra, it has been my wish to bring Lynn Harrell to us. I am particularly pleased that we are now going to interpret Beethoven’s ‘Triple Concerto’ and the Gassenhauer piano trio together. And with a fantastic pianist who is as young as I was when I first played with Lynn Harrell. »
