Urban Fork Restaurant in Zurich: excellent food, service, a cosy atmosphere and 60 craft beers

Are you looking for a new place to eat out or to have a cold beer? If so we found the perfect place for you.

Vivamost tried out a new restaurant for lunch in Zurich last week. We went to the Urban Fork restaurant in Kreis 5. When we arrived the owner of the restaurant, Mike Goguen, warmly greeted us.

We decided to sit inside at a wooden table, decorated rather casually with a French flair. We could have easily  sat outside as the weather was so beautiful and there were plenty of tables in the front.

The chef Claudio and his team create dishes with the finest ingredients and every little detail counts for the best presentation.

We started with a starter with some duck confit served in a homemade dumpling. It was so tasty we wished we would have gotten a second one. Our second course was a super healthy vegetable bowl with salad, red peppers, rice, seeds, orange slices, ginger, topped with a soya and chili sauce. It was as good as it looked. Then we continued with two mini burgers, one with Halloumi cheese and the other with chicken. Both were absolutely delicious. For dessert we had a brownie, made of 65% dark chocolate, with one scoop of vegan peanut butter ice-cream and one of maple bacon toffee. We absolutely enjoyed the homemade ice-creams, one of the passions of Mike.

The Urban Fork celebrates its two-year anniversary this September. Mike opened it in 2018 with his co-partner, Nick. At that time Mike, who is already the owner of Fork & Bottle, said he was ready for a new restaurant, a place in the city with a funky atmosphere.

Their best sellers are the Halloumi burgers with sweet potatoes, the bowls and the brownie. During the weekends they offer Brunches which are almost always sold out so it is better to reserve before you come. The classics are the blueberry pancakes, smoked salmon & avocado eggs Benedict, homemade mueslis and their delicious pulled pork eggs Benedict and avocado smash.

Last week they started weekly full English breakfasts (Wed-Friday from 8 to 11am.) and the After-Diner-Cocktail lounge concept called Barty. Barty is an authentic Craft-Cocktail concept for every Thursday and Friday night from 9.30 pm to 1 am.

For the first evening last Thursday DJ Adam Silverstein, came for an evening of fun with his Vinyl records. He often comes to the Fork & Bottle.

The owner Mike is originally from the USA from Boston He arrived in Switzerland in 2006 after living in London and going to a culinary school there. He started with a catering business, Melt Catering, which grew from word of mouth. It started with an event here and there for a birthday, an apero-riche, then the supper club, parties and corporate events.

Eight years ago he opened outside of Zurich Wollishofen Fork & Bottle, a place with a barn, a beer and vegetable garden, a playground and a playroom for children. He started with the idea to open a family place when he and his wife had a child themselves. It was a crazy time in his life working 18 hours a week and renovating the place. Many of his friends were looking for places to hang out with their children and could not find any. At the Fork & Bottle people like the family friendly rustic atmosphere. The restaurant has become quite popular over the years and can accommodate 500 people a day.

The menus are 30-40 % the same in both places with vegan and gluten-free options. They carry about 60 craft beers from Italy and other places in Europe. Another exciting addition is the Fork & Bottle Food truck, a 1982 German fire truck painted in grey. It can be rented and it has an amazing cooking facility with a plancha and a pizza oven.

Mike says that Melt Catering is the part of the business he enjoys the most. His approach is to always be very flexible and friendly. The restaurant business is really his passion and he enjoys being involved in the many daily activities juggling between the two restaurants and the catering.

We highly recommend  the Urban Fork Restaurant and can´t wait to go back.
