Zurich Film Festival Film Reviews: Antebellum and Preparations to be together for an unknown period of time

ANTEBELLUM

Summary:

The film starts in a cotton plantation in the South of the United States during the American Civil War. Slaves are mistreated, rapped and killed. Eden played by the model and musician Janelle Monáe, wants to escape but she is waiting for the right moment. Suddenly we are in the 20th century in New York in the world of Veronica who is a writer, mother and a happy wife. Veronica just wrote a new book and is having a vernissage. She is for a change where black and white are equal and now is the time to stop white empowerment.

The film constantly goes back between scenes in New York and the cotton plantation. You search for truth. Slowly you understand that you are not going back in time.

This American thriller, which is a Premiere in the German speaking world, comes out at the perfect time during the Black Lives Matter.

The directors, Gerard Bush and Christopher Renz, have picked a great cast (Janelle Monáe, Arabella Landrum, Jena Malone, Eric Lange,Tongayi Chirisa), the costumes are beautiful and the music is powerful.

Next screening: Sat. 03. Oct. 21:15 Corso 1

Does Marta have a psychological disorder? Maybe the two never made an appointment to meet? Is Janos lying when he tells Marta he doesn´t know her? Does he have a wife in Budapest? Will they fall in love?

During the entire mystery film of the Hungarian director Lili Horvát you search for answers, which you will get only at the very end. We enjoyed the film, competing in the feature film competition for a Golden Eye Award.
