The History of the Zurich Film Festival

The Zurich Film Festival is celebrating its 15th year anniversary this year. Karl Spoerri, the artistic director, together with Nadja Schildknecht,the communication director, started the festival in 2005. It is organized through Spoundation Motion Picture Gmbh, which was founded the same year by Karl Spoerri and his partner Antoine Monot.

While the number of visitors increased drastically during the years the number of awards delivered did as well. This year the organizers once more expect over 100,00 entrances in 11 days.   

This time 9 awards will be distributed: 3 for the films in competition (International, documentary and focus), 1 award for a serie, one award for a children’s film, one for music in the film music competition, 1 Tribute award, 1 Golden Icon award and 1 Golden Eye award.

The budget is phenomenal with 7,8 million CHF: The first year it was only 800’000.-

14 International films, 12 documentaries and 12 films from the German speaking directors will be presented to jury members for a Golden Eye. Oliver Stone, a friend of the festival and coming for the 5th time, will be the President of the International Jury.

The last 15 years many personalities in the film industry came to the festival to present a film, to receive an award or be a part of the Jury. Among them were John Travolta, Richard Gere, Diane Keaton, Harrison Ford, Paul Haggis, Susan Sarandon, Johnny Depp, Sean Penn, Hugh Grant, Laurence Fishburn, Tom Tykwer, Glenn Close, Helen Hunt and Roman Polanski.

This year film director Roman Emmerich and 3 powerful women Kristen Stewart, Cate Blanchett and Julie Delpy are expected on the green carpet.

The festival is starting on Thursday next week. We will have updates every day about films and/or green carpets.
