Roger Schäli: 50th successful climbs of the Eiger

Swiss professional alpinist Roger Schäli has broken another record in his long list of accomplishments. Recently he made it to the top of his beloved mountain, the Eiger, for the 50th time. He and partner Lucien Caviezel used the Löcherpiel route, in the Northwall.

The Eiger is located in the Bernese Mountains in Switzerland. The top of the mountain is 3,967 meter.

The first time he climbed this mountain he was just 18 years old. Four years later in 2002 he climbed the Arwa Spire for the first time and he was nominated for the Pionet D’Or.

Roger Schäli is very happy with his new record because the Eiger is his favorite’s mountain. He knows it very well. It is not an easy mountain to climb where more than 60 alpinists are known to have lost their lives.

He may have made it to the top 50 times but he had to try many times and turn back down. Many hours of training, preparation and research about the climbing routes are needed for each success. One of his longest project, the “Japaner Direttissima” lasted 7 years.
