Affirmations & The Power of “I am”

The power of “I am” is extraordinary!

It’s hard to imagine that these two small, unassuming words have the ability to change your whole experience of life… but they can, and they do.

In a previous blog ‘Change Your Thinking, Change Your Life’ I talked about the thought/feeling connection and how that creates your experience of life.

Today I’m going to take that a step further and explore the power of ‘I am’ affirmations as a tool for consciously changing your reality.

What is an affirmation?

Every thought you think and every word you speak is an affirmation. Over time these thoughts and words become your reality and create your perception of yourself and the world around you. With roughly 80% of most people’s repetitive thoughts being negative, it’s no surprise that so many have a less than rosy outlook on life!

But before you panic and shoot off down a rabbit hole of hopelessness, wait! Because the good news is that you can change this!

As I discussed in ‘Change Your Thinking, Change Your Life’, we can let go of the negative thoughts and consciously choose to encourage and affirm the ones that feel great!

Creating positive affirmations opens the door to a whole new world of perception. In essence you’re telling your subconscious mind that you’re taking charge and that you’re aware there’s something you can do to create change.

The tangible benefits of affirmations

Regularly using powerful and meaningful affirmations brings tangible benefits.

They…

  • Motivate you
  • Keep your mind focused on a goal
  • Influence and activate the power of your subconscious mind
  • Change the way you think and behave, which in turn opens up opportunities you might otherwise have never considered
  • Make you feel positive and energised, which means you’re far more likely to make changes to your inner and outer world.

Creating your affirmations

The first step is to get clear on what you want to change in your life. Do you want more joy, abundance, great health, peace, motivation? Whatever it is, write it down.

When it comes to writing affirmations it’s important to state what you want in positive and present tense. The reason is that your subconscious mind doesn’t know there is past and future – as far as your mind is concerned everything is here and now.

The most powerful way to start an affirmation is with, “I am…” or “I have…” Whatever follows is taken as a statement of truth in this very moment, even if it hasn’t happened yet. For example, when you choose to say, “I am very prosperous”, you may at that time actually have very little money in the bank, however your subconscious doesn’t know this. This allows you to plant a seed for future prosperity. When you repeat this affirmation regularly each day, you’re watering that seed, so it takes root and grows.

Here are some more affirmations to get your ideas flowing…

  • I am joyful
  • I am loving and compassionate
  • I am creative
  • I am motivated
  • I am good enough
  • I have a strong, healthy body

You get the idea.

Consistency is key

As with all change, consistency is key. I recommend getting your day off to a positive start by saying your affirmations over and over multiple times first thing in the morning. Then repeat them again as close as you can to going to bed. This helps ensure you have positive thoughts in your mind when you end your day and it’s a great way to embed them into your subconscious as you sleep. Of course, you’re free to say them throughout the day as well if you’d like too (you can’t overdo it!).

I’d like to leave you with one of my go-to affirmations that I say whenever I have a problem:

“All is well, everything is working out for my highest good.” It’s wonderful how quickly this brings me back in balance – I hope it helps you too.
